"Behold, I Will Do A New Thing..." - God

Updated: Apr 20

"Listen carefully, I am about to do a new thing, Now it will spring forth; Will you not be aware of it? I will even put a road in the wilderness, Rivers in the desert."

- Isaiah 43.19 // AMP

With many of us settling into 2025 after the new year was ushered in, we're probably well into our new year's resolutions.

I'm reminded of a caterpillar - crawling away, eating leaves, minding it's business really until one day, it's time to go into its cocoon. Time goes by, and time again. But when the time has come, behold!...a butterfly emerges - glorious as ever - a completely new creation with absolutely no sign to show that it was once a caterpillar.

That is the image this verse paints in my mind.

Much like that caterpillar, we have no clue what's coming tomorrow. Some of us are getting by in life, 'crawling' away. Some us are in cocoons, tired and resting - waiting for our time to come. Some of us are emerging from cocoons - pushing through the threshold of victory as you break out of the trials of the previous year. You may be among those who have already emerged - rising above the old season with beautifully decorated wings (tested, tried, victorious).

Whatever stage of this caterpillar-butterfly metaphor you're at in your life, I'd love for you to pause and reflect on this verse from Isaiah 43.19 above. Before we get there, let's backtrack to verse 2, which says:

"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through fire, you will not be scorched, Nor will the flame burn you."

"Behold, I will do a new thing..." // KJV

That word - 'behold' - originates from the Old Emglish word 'bihaldan'. 'Bi' means thoroughly, and 'haldan' means hold.

This year, hold thoroughly to your spirit that your God is doing a new thing. Perceive it through faith by choosing to believe Jeremiah 29.11, and take hold of it like Abraham took hold of the promise of him one day becoming a father in his old age (with a barren wife).

Our God specialises in the new...that means you can't go back to the old way of doing life when you choose His way. It's much like how a caterpillar can't return to being in it's former state once it has become a butterfly.

"I will even put a road in the wilderness, Rivers in the desert."

I encourage you to make this your resolution:

  1. Caterpillar: whatever you do this year, do it as unto the Lord (Colossians 3.23). No selfish motives, no selfishness or self-centredness. Do it all for God's glory, even when it is hard...especially when it is painful.

  2. Cocoon: Bury yourself in the Word. Let this become your cocoon. Read the Word daily and allow it to transform you with each Word. Start with a verse or chapter and ask Holy Spirit to give you a love for the Word. You'll see 😊...

  3. Butterfly: make up your mind not to go back to the old ways of doing things and living life (whatever this looks like to you). Let the Word of God transform you this year, and allow Him to do His 'new thing' in you.

No matter the season you face in 2025, you will be a butterfly with a strong spirit made new by the Word of God.

Coming back to the butterfly metaphor, whatever season you feel you're in now, know this - you are right where you need to be. Trust in God. Believe He's doing a new thing, and don't lose your AWE of Him (ever).

Trust in the Lord your God. Lean not on your own understanding. In ALL your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight (Proverbs 3. 5-6).

If you're in a hard season and it's hard to even imagine that anything can go right or better for you, or maybe 2024 took the breathe out of you and you need help believing again. Maybe you've just had enough...I get it! Let's be real...it IS hard to believe and go on sometimes. God commands that we have faith, and He teaches us to have each others backs in prayer, too.
